Brewing Methods with NeoBean: The French Press

At NeoBean, we believe that how you brew your coffee is just as important as what you brew. That’s why we’re continuing our Brewing Methods series — helping you unlock the full potential of your favorite NeoBean blends through the right preparation techniques.

This week, we’re diving into one of the most loved and accessible brewing methods out there: the French Press.

Whether you’re sipping Cerebro Blend for sharp focus, enjoying the boldness of Black Label Cerebro Blend, or pouring Single-Origin for a taste of terroir, the French Press delivers a rich, full-bodied experience that captures every note and benefit of your functional brew.

What Is the French Press?

Also known as a press pot or plunger, the French Press is a manual brewing device invented in the 1920s. It uses immersion brewing, meaning your coffee grounds steep directly in hot water before being separated by a metal mesh filter.

Unlike pour-over methods that rely on gravity, the French Press offers a stronger extraction, creating a more robust and intense cup — perfect for NeoBean’s mushroom-infused blends.

Why Use French Press for Functional Coffee?

NeoBean coffees aren’t just flavorful — they’re packed with carefully selected ingredients like functional mushrooms, premium Arabica and Robusta beans, and adaptogenic herbs (depending on your blend).

The French Press:

  • Extracts more natural oils and body, bringing out the rich, earthy complexity of our blends
  • Allows the mushroom extracts to fully integrate into the brew
  • Doesn’t use paper filters, which means no micronutrients lost
  • Makes a smooth, low-acid cup that’s easy on the stomach

What You’ll Need

  • NeoBean Coffee (coarse grind recommended)
  • French Press (8-cup or 4-cup model)
  • Fresh filtered water
  • Kettle
  • Spoon or stir stick
  • Timer

Step-by-Step: How to Brew NeoBean with a French Press

Step 1: Measure Your Coffee

Use 1 gram of coffee for every 15–17 grams of water. For a standard 8-cup press (1 liter), that’s about 60–65 grams of coarse-ground NeoBean coffee.

Recommended NeoBean pairings:

Step 2: Boil and Cool Your Water

Bring your water to a boil (about 205°F or 96°C), then let it cool for 30–45 seconds before pouring.

Step 3: Bloom the Grounds

Add the coffee to your French Press and pour in just enough water to saturate the grounds (about 100ml). Let it bloom for 30 seconds, allowing gases to release and flavors to open up.

Step 4: Pour and Stir

Add the rest of your water, then give it a gentle stir to make sure all the grounds are immersed.

Step 5: Steep

Place the lid on but don’t plunge yet. Let the coffee steep for 4 minutes. For a bolder cup, you can extend this to 5 minutes.

Step 6: Plunge and Pour

Slowly press the plunger down with even pressure. Once pressed, serve immediately to prevent over-extraction.

Flavor Profile: What to Expect

The French Press brings out a deep, round body with lower acidity. Expect:

  • Full earthy notes from functional mushrooms
  • Smooth strength from Robusta-heavy blends like Black Label
  • Balanced clarity from Cerebro’s adaptogenic profile
  • Origin complexity in single-origin varieties

It’s a method that respects the complexity of your coffee and enhances the benefits of every cup.

Tips for Better French Press Coffee

  • Always use a coarse grind to avoid sludge and over-extraction
  • Preheat your French Press with hot water before brewing
  • Clean your press thoroughly after each use to avoid oil buildup
  • Don’t let coffee sit in the press — decant it after brewing

Functional Benefits in Every Sip

Because NeoBean coffee is more than just caffeine, the French Press allows you to enjoy the full functional benefits of our 8-mushroom blends without filtering out their potency.
